isWatching: An Inside Look - The Login

My new project, isWatching, is progressing very quickly. In fact, I opened it up for a short test a couple of nights ago and was quite pleased with the results that were received.

isWatching is a web application that allows users to "check-in" to the movie that they are currently watching and post it directly to their favourite social networks; initial integration will be into Facebook and Twitter, but once they are active, there's no reason why more can't be added.

One of the flaws that I noticed had to do with the log-in system. While all users were able to log in and authenticate correctly with Facebook (Twitter was still to be integrated at that stage), the system had trouble recognising them after they left the application and returned at a later time.

The problem was with the setting of a "cookie" (a small packet of information on the users device/computer that stores their login information for a short time) and it proved to be more than a little tricky to fix.

Initially, the application ran on the same system as this website does, which is a custom-built content management system that I knocked up for another application that I have been building (more to come on that at a later date; it's all very "hush hush" for now), albeit slightly customised to suit the needs of isWatching. The problem with using this as yet unnamed system, is that the storing of cookies becomes a little more difficult to do, due mainly to the framework that the system uses. It's not a huge issue though, it just requires a little more though when it comes to customising the system.

At any rate, that's all work for another day; after all, being able to log in is great, but if the rest of the application isn't finished yet, then there really isn't much point!

Now for part one of the "inside look" at the isWatching app.

Below are some screen-shots of the login screen as it is seen from certain mobile devices. The aim with isWatching is to make it available to all mobile devices that are capable of displaying content in a web browser. For now, the system is guaranteed to display and perform perfectly in the following devices, but there are definitely more to come:

BlackBerry Curve 8900Nokia N8Apple iPhone 4s

That's all for now, but I will be adding more as the development progresses past certain milestones.

Given that fact that I have too much free time (or so it would seem), I've updated my website again.
